Since hdmkv's links are far more complete than anything we had on Samples (wiki), I pretty much just replaced it with the first post. It also links back to this thread for discussion about samples/clips. Much better now ;)

Thanks Ned... you gave me access to the wiki, but I haven't had time. Some of the links in my first post no longer work as MediaFire deleted them for some reason, so I need to re-upload to Google Drive instead. Will fix in post #1 here and the wiki this afternoon... I promise Smile.

Okay, done... please see post #1:

- Re-uploaded all MediaFire samples to my Google Drive a/c (much better; no pop-up or pop-under crap like MediaFire)
- Added several new samples/demos

I'll continue to maintain the wiki. If you guys have new A/V samples or demos not already covered, please let me know. Also, any broken links? Please alert me here or via PM. Thanks.

Added additional clips (ATMOS and HEVC), plus a VP9 4K source... didn't even know VP9 existed as an open-source alternative 4K format to HEVC...

Yep! VP9 is from Google and that is what they use for YouTube 4K (50/60fps) clips. Not sure about other 4K fps.

Many thanks in advance.

Please see this wiki page, where all links have been moved & updated/revised. I'll be maintaining it.

This thread will remain open for discussions and input for new A/V test samples or demos. If you find any broken links, please let me know. Thanks.

I see there are 1080i/25 and 1080i/50 links. However 1080i25 and 1080/50i are the same thing (there is only one interlaced 50Hz format in widespread use). I'd suggest consistent naming for interlaced content.

For info :

1080/59.94i =1080i29.97
1080/50i = 1080i25
576/50i = 576i25
480/59.94i = 480i29.97

1080/59.94p = 1080p59.94
1080/50p = 1080p50
1080/25p = 1080p25
1080/23.976p = 1080p23.976
720/59.94p = 720p59.94
720/50p = 720p50
720/25p = 720p25

There are two ways of describing video content - one (XXXX/YYf) uses the image refresh rate, the other (XXXXfYY) the frame rate. They are the same for progressive formats, but not for interlaced. (Image refresh rate = frame rate for progressive content but FIELD rate for interlaced, which is usually twice the frame rate)

Conventionally you use image refresh rate in the XXXX/YYi or XXXX/YYp format, but in XXXXiYY or XXXXpYY you use the frame rate only.

Personally I prefer the image refresh rate, as it avoids people thinking that 50i (aka i25) content has a 25Hz refresh rate... But the EBU and many other technical broadcast organisations use the frame rate definition standard.

I've added a... few ::cough:: extra files to the Jellyfish Bitrate Test Files site:

I recomand adding 4k pattern test: link
Either view directly in Youtube (but very few devices support Youtube 4k) or downloaded to local file.

I've redone all of the Jellyfish Bitrate Test Files using a couple of royalty-free (but pricey) video clips. This was preemptive on my part in order to avoid any conflict with the copyright owner of the original video clip. Better safe than sorry!

After two straight days of encoding and testing and encoding and testing and encoding... I never want to see another freaking jellyfish again. Big Grin

To put those bitrates into perspective - broadcast HD (at up to 1080p30 or i60) VTRs run at 440Mbs (using MPEG4 Simple Studio Profile) for 10-bit 4:2:2 and 880Mbs for 12-bit 4:4:4.

HD Cam SR is deemed essentially transparent for sane numbers of multigenerational recordings at 440Mbs for 4:2:2 content. (It probably is for insane numbers to. It's an amazing format, sadly being retired in favour of AVCi 100Mbs in many areas for programme delivery.)
